If you can’t hear the other person during a call or they can’t hear you, it doesn’t always mean there’s a network problem. Audio issues are often caused by device settings, permissions, headsets, or background apps.
This guide helps you identify what’s happening, why, and how to fix it.
First: What Kind of Audio Issue Are You Experiencing?
Audio problems usually fall into one of these situations:
🔇 You can’t hear the other person
🔇 The other person can’t hear you
🔇 Neither of you can hear each other
Each case can have slightly different causes, but the troubleshooting steps below apply to all of them.
Common Reasons Audio Doesn’t Work
Audio issues are most commonly caused by:
Headset or Bluetooth problems
Microphone or speaker permissions
Another app using your microphone
App or device glitches
Data-saving settings
Weak or unstable internet
Troubleshooting Steps (Follow in Order)
1. Check Headset or Speaker Issues
Disconnect any wired or Bluetooth headset
Use your phone’s built-in speaker and microphone
If using Bluetooth, make sure it’s properly connected — or turn it off and test again
2. Check Microphone Volume & Permissions
Make sure your microphone is not muted or set too low
Allow microphone access in your phone’s app settings
Test your microphone by recording a voice memo
If the recording is silent, the issue is on the device side
3. Close Background Apps
Close apps that may use audio (voice recorders, assistants, call apps)
Restart your phone to ensure no other app is using the microphone
4. Check Your Internet Connection
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
Run a speed test (minimum 1 Mbps upload & download)
Restart your router or move closer to it for a stronger signal
A weak connection can cause one-way audio or no audio at all.
5. Check App Settings & Updates
Make sure the app is updated to the latest version
Restart the app and try calling again
If the issue continues, reinstall the app
6. Restart Your Device
Restarting your phone clears temporary software or audio glitches
7. Test Calls to Multiple Recipients
Call another person
If audio works with others, the issue is likely recipient-specific
If audio fails with everyone, the issue is likely device or network-related
Important to Know (VoIP Perspective)
VoIP calls depend on both sides:
Your device must allow audio
The recipient’s device must allow audio
Both sides need a stable connection at the same time
Even if your setup is correct, audio may fail if:
The recipient has microphone issues
The recipient is in a poor-coverage area
The recipient’s network is unstable at that moment
