Why Did My Call Reach the Wrong Person?

This article explains rare situations where a call connects to a different person than intended, what causes this, and how to tell the difference between a real cross-connection and other network responses.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

When This Can Happen

In rare cases, you may dial a number but hear or reach someone you did not intend to call.
This is known as a cross-connection.

Cross-connections happen at the telecom routing level, not inside the Talk360 app.

Why This Can Happen

Cross-connections are typically caused by issues outside Talk360, such as:

  • Telecom routing errors between carriers

  • Number reassignment, where a carrier has recycled or reassigned a number

  • Cached or outdated routing information in carrier networks

These situations are rare and usually related to how telecom operators route calls.

Hearing an Automated Voice or Announcement? (Important)

Sometimes, users hear an automated voice message instead of a person.

This is NOT a cross-connection.

Important to understand:

  • You are not connected to another person

  • The message does not come from Talk360

  • It comes from a telecom network, carrier, or destination system

You may hear:

  • A recorded announcement

  • A system message (often in another language)

  • A short warning or routing notice

  • A message that sounds like voicemail or an operator message

This usually means:

  • The call was blocked, filtered, or rejected

  • The destination network does not allow the call

  • The number is unavailable, restricted, or unreachable at that moment

📌 Automated voice messages indicate a network or carrier response, not an incorrect connection.

How This Is Different from a Cross-Connection

What you hear

What it means

Automated or recorded message

Network or carrier response

Stranger speaking

Possible cross-connection

Ringing but no answer

Call failure or recipient unavailable

Call connects then drops

Network or call quality issue

This distinction helps ensure the issue is routed correctly and avoids unnecessary escalation.

What You Should Do First

Follow these steps in order:

1️⃣ Manually Dial the Number

Enter the number using the full international format:

+CountryCodePhoneNumber

Avoid calling from saved contacts during testing.

2️⃣ Check Your Saved Contact

If manual dialing works:

  • Update the contact

  • Save the number only in international format

3️⃣ Test with Your Mobile Carrier (If Possible)

If the same issue happens when calling from your regular mobile line, this confirms a carrier-side routing issue, not an app issue.

Important to Know

  • Cross-connections are very rare

  • Talk360 cannot control:

    • Carrier routing decisions

    • Number recycling

    • Telecom network caching

  • Automated voice messages are not cross-connections

  • If a call is misrouted, Support can investigate and adjust credits if applicable

When to Contact Human Support

Contact Support via the app if:

  • You consistently reach a stranger when calling the same number

  • The issue happens across multiple attempts

  • Manual dialing does not resolve it

Include:

  • The number you dialed

  • What you heard (person vs automated message)

  • Date and time of the call

  • Whether it also happens via your mobile carrier

This helps us determine whether the issue is a true cross-connection or a network-level response.
